How to use Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL etc. to get a cool job?

Hi everyone,

I just want to say a couple words about the use of English tests for your career growth. If we take such “international” jobs as in the IT sphere, we realize that everything hinges upon your English level mastery. There are thousands of smart and intelligent people out there, but not so many with regard to their English. Given that everything in IT is written in English, you should be aware that English has to be your priority if you want to pursue a career in a huge IT company…

OK, I face a common situation when the student tells me something like “I have applied for a position in the … company, and they are quite impressed with my professional merits, but they say they just cannot hire me for my poor English… They say they are expecting me, so I have to improve my English, and then everything will be set…” In this case the client fully realizes the importance of her/his rapid progress in the language. But the problem is that it is not easy to define the degree of the improvement itself: how can I understand that I am ready to reapply for a job and schedule an interview? Is it going to happen in three months? Or half a year? Or a year?.. You see, it is really not that easy to embrace the scope of your progress. We need some mileposts that will serve as the indicator of your progress. Otherwise you can spend three-four years trying to do something about your English and not advance considerably. Your mind wants a clearly outlined goal – then it will focus upon its attainment.

So, here those tests of English like Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL and others come in handy. I can say that based upon my tutoring experience, in order to succeed at your IT job interviews, you should pass an English test with about 2/3 or more of its highest band. If we take IELTS, we have 2/3 of 9.0 – which is 6. or higher. Let us presume that you take IELTS next week and get 4.5. So, you get it that you have to improve by 1.5 points in the least – in such a case your brain sees its target and is eager to set about achieving it. You poke around on the Internet, find a decent tutor and start training. How long will it take? Oh, this is a tough question since there are many aspects involved starting with your linguistic cognitive abilities and finishing with the amount of time spent daily on improving your English skills. Anyhow, I tell you: if you see your goal, you will achieve it, period!

If we take an instance of Duolingo English Test, the 2/3 of 160 is about 110. So, if you have got 110 or higher – you can apply for a job. If you have got 80 – you realize that you have to grow by the minimum of 30 points on Duolingo (and the more the better).

So, dear friends, if you have been rejected for a position due to lack of English proficiency – not to worry, there is a sufficient amount of time at your discretion to improve! And to accomplish this more efficiently, you better focus on some English test preparation – then you will progress more rapidly, guaranteed!
