Hi everyone, this brief post is dedicated to certain interesting statistics derived from my 20 years of tutoring experience. Often students ask me about how much they can improve in 1 month? For instance, if you have got 90 out of 160 for Duolingo, to what extent you can raise your score in about 30 days?
It is a very interesting question…:)) Given that we are all unique, probably there isn’t going to be a universal answer to such an inquiry, but still, I will tell you something…
We have accomplished the following with my students: taking the previous example with 90 points, we improved by 20 POINTS within around 30 days! Of course, such success requires huge desire on the part of both the tutor and the student, and the talent of the tutor as well… However, I have done such things more than once…
20 points of improvement in Duolingo English Test can be compared to about 1.0 point at IELTS or 15 points at TOEFL. So, I want you to know that if you have scored let’s say 5.5 for your IELTS, you need the minimum of 6.5 for your test, and you have one month to do it, you can do it!
Sure, such an improvement can be effected ONLY on condition that you entirely PLUNGE into English under the guidance of your experienced tutor, and LIVE ENGLISH for 30 days! There are no guarantees or even high probabilities that you will succeed, still, I tell you that it is not out of the question…
Teaching methodology and talent of the tutor matter greatly! We are used to those boring classical tutors who open a huge textbook and start doing grammar exercises with the student. With such an approach you can fail to improve not even by 5 points at Duolingo in 1 month, let alone 20 points… The situation requires something out of the box – in short, it needs the outstanding capability of the tutor… And then everything is possible.
Usually, within short periods of time, your Speaking and Writing are the quickest to improve. This is so due to a lot of psychology involved in the process of speaking and writing. When you feel HOW to write better, you will definitely improve your performance. On the other hand, if we take Reading at any test of English, it asks from you to enlarge your passive vocabulary in colocations by several thousands of words – it is not very likely to happen in 30 days, taking into account your need to also listen, write and speak…
