Hello everyone, I just want to remind ourselves of those basic principles of writing your essays at any English test – the recommendations are the same mostly… Of course, the very degree of “academicity” varies from test to test, and still, if you do not know which style to stick to, I would highly recommend you to use this academic style.
What does academic mean? Well, it means that 1) you sound like an educated person and 2) it is easy to understand your logic. The common logic for both written and spoken creations have been honed through centuries but haven’t changed much from Socrates times, I guess… This logic has it that you should keep to the universal law of nature in your writing: you clearly make an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Sometimes it is possible that you better do without your conclusion like at IELTS Academic Writing 1 where you describe a table, but it is more of n exception rather than a rule…
So, Nature has three main stages of life cycle of things: childhood, maturity and senior years with the subsequent death. It is natural and beautiful. Thus, if you follow this universal pattern, the reader will most probably be satisfied because he feels this natural harmony in the composition of your essay…
I understand that for some of you this old beaten model may seem tedious and colorless – I agree with you! but remember: IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, and all others are NOT the tests of your Creative Talent – they are testing your English! They are standardized…
Also remember that according to this universal law of composition in nature, it is ideal to build your parts of the essay in the following proportion: 1-3-1, that is, introduction should ideally make 20% of the whole essay, body – 60%, and conclusion – 20%. In this way, your essay looks harmonious and appeals to the reader…
If you have only 5 minutes, as in Duolingo English Test, to write your essay, sometimes you just do not physically have time for the conclusion. It is normal. The grader will understand it. He or she will feel that you were going to provide some harmonious closure to the essay, but you were just short of time.
OK, friends, in the next article we will talk about the inner structure of each part of your essay – how to make it even more appealing to the grader…
