Hi everyone, if you are new to PTE (Pearson Test of English), I think it will be of some interest for you to learn the overall structure and approaches to PTE scoring system.
To put it in simple words, you can get from 10 to 90 points for PTE. If you are going to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, most colleges will require from you the score between 50-60 points. If you want to get your Master’s, then try to get 55-70 points. Of course, it also depends upon the prestige of the University and the specifics of your field of study: the more famous your university, the higher the requirements. You probably know that for such institutions as Massachusetts, you should have the highest score for everything possible plus some academic achievements like victories in international olympiads and all that jazz…
What is interesting about PTE scoring system is that your overall score is not just a mathematical average of four sub-scores. Those sub-scores are Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking (pretty standard) – however, some of those 20 types of tasks at PTE influence several sub-scores, so everything is quite complicated)). For you to understand better PTE scoring approach, let us look at the correlation between PTE and also IELTS and TOEFL scores. Then you are able to draw some inferences for yourself.
Here is a table of PTE and IELTS bands concordance.

It seems that for IELTS 9.0 there is NO PTE direct equivalent – do they mean that the highest score for PTE is anyway lower than IELTS maximum band? That there are no such difficult tasks at PTE than at IELTS?:)
So, from this table you can surmise that if you have already passed IELTS and got something like 6.0, you are very likely to get about 50 for PTE. A lot of candidates say that PTE is easier – may be so; however, when I recall those TWENTY tasks of PTE, I begin to have some doubts…:)
OK, here is another table – this one is about PTE and TOEFL scores correlation.

Here we can see that if you need something like 80 at TOEFL (which is the lowest score required by most colleges for Bachelor’s courses), you should get 55 or more at PTE.
I think, in order to realize which test is more convenient for you, there is no other way than to pass a couple of them! For instance, if you have a choice between PTE and IELTS – you should sit both tests. Otherwise how can you decide which one is better for you? If you don’t try both, you will have to rely upon other people’s opinions which can be misleading…
