Hello, dear readers, I would like to give you a handy idea on how you should write your essays (or any type of a writing task) at DET, TOEFL, IELTS and all other tests. This small article was prompted by one of my students who was constantly trying to use huge pompous templates at her Duolingo essays, which was the result of her previous tutor teaching her for IELTS. I don’t know why but IELTS is a champion of these silly prolongated cliched proclamations. Whether it is the beginning of an essay, or the middle paragraph – thousands of candidates venture stuffing twenty words into the place for intended three words. They hope it will bring them flying colors:)) However, in the majority of cases, IELTS (Duolingo too, I think) gives them some mediocre 6 out of 9 or 110 out of 160.
Let us have a look at three styles of writing used to render one and the same idea. Let us imagine a question like “Some people think that sport is very important in our lives. Other. however, state that the game is not worth the candle, and sports can even lead to complications of bodily conditions. What is your opinion? Please provide reasons.” Below, you will see three kinds of introductory sentences for this topic, all favouring the idea of doing sports in our lives.
So, here are these three variants:
Based on common sense, and also on hundreds of academic works in the literary world, and despite many an argument to the contrary, the importance of sports in the lives of individuals seems difficult to overestimate.
In my opinion, doing sports is extremely important in our lives. I truly believe that without exercising, our body will become weaker and as a result, a person will most probably experience an illness.
Sport is essential, period! Without regular physical activity, our body is likely to decline, becoming more susceptible to disease and decay.
OK, which one do you like? A lot of guys will enjoy the first one for its “complexity”, though I can tell you, based on my experience, that you will be penalized for this “facundity”. Actually, I as a tutor know that the third variant will receive the highest score. The second one is OK and is utilized by a plethora of candidates who clothe their writing into the spoken style. The first one is a silly ostentatious cliched gibberish, still revered by numerous tutors as well as their students.
Try to be concise. Try to use each word as a tool. Each word must be meaningful, so that without it the sentence will be altered. Don’t just fill the space with empty fillers. You will not get the maximum possible score for this. The reader should feel comfortable and easy with reading and comprehending your message.
