Hello, I just want to tell you a couple of words about my experience of tutoring a young lady for Duolingo test, specifically our progress in writing Duolingo essays and descriptions, as well as summaries. Also, we witnessed the evident lowering of the score for her production by the DET AI. I demonstrate all of this in my short video on YouTube, so in this article I will only voice my opinion of the accuracy of DET algorithm.
So, we had several lessons, practicing and scrutinizing all skills essential for DET success. Yet the most ardent attention was devoted to writing and speaking, as these two are mostly the stumbling block for most Duolingo candidates, this girl not being an exception. Within about a month she had improved considerably, making much fewer mistakes in spelling, basic grammar and the basics of style. In the video above I show you her two essays: one of about a month ago (a home assignment), and the second one being a real Duolingo Writing Sample. If you analyze these essays with me, I think you will agree that she had made a serious progress. However, the subscore for her DET Production remained unchanged at 100. I have a lot of experience tutoring guys from all over the world to DET, and I AM sure that this student deserved more than 100 – 105 at least! It would have impacted her overall score, so she would have got 125, not 120 as she had. Fortunately, 120 was sufficient for her target university to accept her.
I have experienced such lower scoring of my students for several times. Of course, I admit that DET is an AI driven procedure, so it may not be flawless, but how frustrating it is for a candidate to know that he\she is writing and speaking better, and still getting the same Production subscore! Very often, in order to override such a mistake in the assessment, you have just to take the test several times in a row – in 2-3 attempts you will get what you want provided you have progressed in your English. But what if the candidate does not have so much time?
